Portland's original golf course was constructed in 1925. It wasn't much more than a rough pasture located on a farm north of town. In November 1926, a meeting of the members was called by the First President S. A. Horning to discuss the future of the course. At this meeting a motion was made and carried to organize a new course. Howard Benson of Lansing and Charles Lockwood of Portland agreed to provide enough land for 18 holes and open the first 9 holes before July 1927. The new course officially opened in June 1927, and has been in continuous operation since that time.

The Portland Country Club sits on a beautifully manicured 100 acres of pure rolling terrain and mature trees. This course plays to a solid 6100 yards and is a true test for all kinds of players. Come and play golf like the way it was designed when golf was just starting.

Good course for new golfers Took my daughter who is new to the game. Course is perfect for beginners. Easy pace of play, friendly golfers. Condition of course was good not great. Staff friendly. July 25, 2014
Nice Course, Poor Clubhouse The greens and fairways were smooth and well maintained. Had some trouble finding the tee-box for hole 17. Made me think the holes were renumbered at some point. The clubhouse is old and in need of a serious renovation. However, the value for the money was great. We got to the course 45 minutes early and were able to play right away. There were some hills, so walking all 18 holes would be a challenge. July 14, 2014
Good for the money The course was in good shape, even with the rain. Was a great course off the gold tee,s for seniors. Played some of my best. July 9, 2014
kennedy Course is in excellent condition. Weather was perfect and play was steady with no waiting. July 8, 2014
terrific course for the price Played a very enjoyable round there on a weekday morning. The fairways are in terrific shape, and the rough is very fair. June 17, 2014
More than your moneys worth Course knowledge would be very helpful. A variety of different types of holes. Get to use a lot of different clubs. Greens were fair. Drove an hour and half to play and will go back June 13, 2014
Great value The course is nice, clean & in good shape. Everyone at the course was friendly. A good course to play & a great value with last minute golfer! June 8, 2014
Good for practice, if cheap The course maintenance was lacking. Long grass on the fairways. The greens were in really rough shape. Bumpy, long grass and just overall not well taken care of. There were a few times where my partner or myself would hit just off the fairway and not be able to find the ball because it was so gnarled and long. I understand that rough is supposed to be a part of the course, but it seemed a bit excessive. Hole layout was another issue for me. Share tee boxes for multiple holes. No way to get to some tee boxes without crossing in front of a different teebox or green. Directions not well laid out on the more confusing locations. To get to the 17th teebox from the 16th green you need to cross directly behind another green and another hole's teebox as well. May 5, 2014
