Black Lake Golf Club

While many courses have two or three so-called signature holes that are worthy of brochure status, every hole at Black Lake Golf Club could easily be on the front cover of a magazine promoting the course. That is one reason that it was placed #44 in Golf Digest's "100 Greatest Public Courses in America" in May 2012 and placed #9 in the Best Value category.

The course is owned by the UAW, who selected one of golf’s most acclaimed course architects, Rees Jones, to design an environmentally responsible, championship caliber course. It was a challenge eagerly embraced by Jones, Golf World Magazine’s “Architect of the Year” in 1995.

“The holes were here, we just had to find them,” Jones said. “We strive for holes blending with the natural terrain. There is nothing artificial or contrived at Black Lake. We were trying to build an old-style, course," Jones said. "You'll notice we don't have mounds or moguls. We just have sweeps and natural grades."

The condition of the course is immaculate making your round more enjoyable, the only bad lie on the course comes with an errant shot that enters in the woods or the hazards.

Complementing the championship course is The Little Course, a nine-hole par 3 meant to introduce young people to the game as well as sharpen veteran players' short games. In addition, Black Lake also presents an unrivaled practice area with a 350-yard double sided bentgrass tee range, four practice bunkers and four chipping and putting greens, a clubhouse with dining room and lounge, and men's and women's locker rooms.

Black Lake is open to the public and welcomes all guests as if they were members. The course is designed to provide a challenging experience for golfers at all levels of skill, with five or more sets of tee markers on nearly every hole, playing length from 5,058 to 7,030 yards.

Very well maintained This is one of my most favorite courses. Challenging but fair and always in great shape. July 25, 2014
Excellent lay-out The coursed is in great shape and offered a great golfing experience. Will play again. July 12, 2013
Great Condition Rate it right up there with Elk Ridge , Black Lake is my new favorite, will play again soon. July 9, 2013
You feel like you are the only group on the course. Very long ride to some of the holes. Definitely cannot walk this one. The only bad experience we had on our day at the course was my husbands conversation with the new manager. He asked my husband if he had played here before. My husband answered that we have been playing here every year since it opened. He said well I have been too in a very abrasive tone. My husband was not expecting this type of really unfriendly response. The wait staff was very friendly. We had lunch before our round. And a drink after our round and the service was very good. The food is good and the club house is beautiful. You will not be disappointed with the course challenging and fair.. Just don't talk to the big union manager guy. July 5, 2013
Great course Excellent course with some challenging holes. I would go back in a heart beat to play again. June 24, 2013
Jewel of the North This course was absolutely beautiful. The grounds were in outstanding shape despite having over 4 inches of rain the previous week (two days previously we played a course a few miles away that cost more and was water logged). I was amazed that we did not see more people on the course on Memorial Day. We had a 8:40 AM tee time and were the 2nd group out on the course. The only reason it took 4 hours to complete our round was that we spent a lot of time in the woods looking for my partner's errant shots. May 30, 2013
