While many courses have two or three so-called signature holes that are worthy of brochure status, every hole at Black Lake Golf Club could easily be on the front cover of a magazine promoting the course. That is one reason that it was placed #44 in Golf Digest's "100 Greatest Public Courses in America" in May 2012 and placed #9 in the Best Value category.

The course is owned by the UAW, who selected one of golf’s most acclaimed course architects, Rees Jones, to design an environmentally responsible, championship caliber course. It was a challenge eagerly embraced by Jones, Golf World Magazine’s “Architect of the Year” in 1995.

“The holes were here, we just had to find them,” Jones said. “We strive for holes blending with the natural terrain. There is nothing artificial or contrived at Black Lake. We were trying to build an old-style, course," Jones said. "You'll notice we don't have mounds or moguls. We just have sweeps and natural grades."

The condition of the course is immaculate making your round more enjoyable, the only bad lie on the course comes with an errant shot that enters in the woods or the hazards.

Complementing the championship course is The Little Course, a nine-hole par 3 meant to introduce young people to the game as well as sharpen veteran players' short games. In addition, Black Lake also presents an unrivaled practice area with a 350-yard double sided bentgrass tee range, four practice bunkers and four chipping and putting greens, a clubhouse with dining room and lounge, and men's and women's locker rooms.

Black Lake is open to the public and welcomes all guests as if they were members. The course is designed to provide a challenging experience for golfers at all levels of skill, with five or more sets of tee markers on nearly every hole, playing length from 5,058 to 7,030 yards.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Play a top course We play as a couple all the courses in Northern Michigan and this is our favorite. It is the best bite for the buck! Don't miss it as part of your golf experience. October 1, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by An excellent day! I've played this course before which is exactly why I keep going back. It is an amazingly beautiful course. Fair yet challenging course. Very friendly staff. Clubhouse is beautiful inside and out. If you consider yourself a golfer then you will be glad you played here. September 29, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by everything great we enjoyed it all. I want to play it again and again September 23, 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by A not so great experience No bag person available to load bags. Had to search and then got reluctant help. Grueling 4 hour 45 minute round. No ranger. No beverage cart. Lots of bugs. September 18, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Hidden Gem This is not the first time I have played Black Lake nor will it be the last. This course is ALWAYS in impeccable condition. I brought a group of 20+ guys there. They all loved the course. It suits golfers of all levels with the different tees. You must make the drive to play this course. Group golfer generally runs a promotion in October for this course for $44!! If you don't mind the trip, you have to play this course! The greens putt very true, and the tees and fairways are perfect. September 17, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice The course was nice. We encountered some black nats on the course which was a little annoying. The course was in great condition. The starter was very friendly! For the most part enjoyed our day! September 7, 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Very long round Great course in good condition. The layout is pretty tight with many uphill and downhill shots. Greens were great. Bad- the round took 5:28. We called the clubhouse as there were 4 groups on the 5th hole. Ranger said pace of play was on time. Waited 5 minutes on very hole from there on. Ruined the whole round. August 1, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Off the beaten path but worth it!!!! Took a detour off the I-75 beaten path on a trip up to Petosky and it was worth the hour diversion.Played the course on a weds in July on a golfnow hot deal for 35.00.It was well worth that for a course that was in excellent condition.Thought there would be more holes with "elevation"...there were some...just not as many as I had hoped for such as some of the courses in Gaylord have...not a negative by any stretch. The course from tee to green was immaculate.Pace of play was just under 4 hrs on a perfect july afternoon...traps were better than most but not primo...some small rocks/pebbles..just a minor annoyance more than anything,,still give it 5 stars in spite of the sand conditions. If your are in northern Michigan and can get a hotdeal price you will not be dissapointed July 27, 2015
