Santa Maria has consistently received Golf Digest's highest ranking for a municipal course. It is conveniently located one mile off of historic Highland Road near I-10. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the course is built on 150 acres of rolling terrain, featuring 15 lakes and two natural waterways. Sand and grass bunkers, exquisite Bermuda fairways and ancient oaks provide the perfect setting for a memorable test of golf. The 18-hole course measures 6,826 yards in length from the championship tees. The Spanish-style clubhouse includes a pro shop, a full-service restaurant and a private conference/ dining room and fitness center. Champions Grill overlooks the beautiful par-five finishing hole. Santa Maria recently purchased a new fleet of golf carts.

Santa Maria reopened to the public May 27, 2006 after being closed for a year for the first major renovations in the course's history. Improvements totaling more than 2.1 million dollars were made to nearly every aspect of the course including: adding new greenside and fairway bunkers to restore original Robert Trent Jones, Sr. design, new concession and clubhouse facilities, reshaping and replanting of tees, greens and fairways, new bulkheads and sheet pilings along waterways, new restrooms and major repairs to cart paths.

Great Afternoon Round at Santa Maria The weather was awesome and the course was in great shape. Not many people out, so I was able to play at my own pace. They have recenlty added another set of tees between the white tees and the ladies tees for those that need them. The greens rolled true as ever and I can't wait to get back out there. great value for the caliber of course course well maintained considering weather conditions as of late(RAIN). Staff extremely accomodating as in combining single with single, singles with 2 more etc. BEST VALUE IN TOWN!!!!! April 5, 2013
A good course with a decent price This golf course is usually in okay condition. It has its moments where it isn't in great shape but can also be amazing at times. The price is just slightly steep for a public golf course, in my opinion. Overall, a good golf experience in Baton Rouge. March 27, 2013
Everyone in club house are friendly and helpful! We felt welcomed. Great course at a great value and a helpful staff. March 6, 2013
Decent course, good conditions, but RTJ design? The description says that Robert Trent Jones designed the course. I have trouble with that statement, because, to me, it didn't look or feel like his designs. The course is a good course that is well kept and playable by all levels of golfer. The practice facility needs a little work. Overall, a good choice for the Baton Rouge area. February 14, 2013
Enjoyable course After all the rain we've had, the course is in pretty good condition. The greens are very nice, rolling true, but the overall speed was slower than the practice green. Overall, an enjoyable afternoon on a very nice course. February 8, 2013
Great course!! The only negative was 24 hours earlier over an inch of rain fell. The sand traps had standing water and some of the fairways had standing water. But most of the course was still in great condition. February 3, 2013
great course, staff less than friendly Great bang for your buck with Santa Maria at this price, but the staff did not seem pleased that I had booked with golfnow.com. half the course was closed due to standing water and the staff didn't want to give us a rain check, no matter because golf now.com was helpful and accommodating as always. A good challenge Good challenge for the 12-18 handicap player. Good, fast greens, forgiving fairways. December 2, 2012
great course Awesome Course! I'm from Georgia and every time I come to Baton Rouge, I play this course. I has great greens and the course is challenging from every set of tees for all levels of golfers. I love the finishning hole (#18). Reached in two from 200 across the water to 8 feet above the hole. Just missed eagle on the lip and tapped in for birdie! November 24, 2012
This course has good practice facilities: Driving range, chipping/bunker green, 2 putting greens. For the money, you can't beat this course. It is always kept in good condition. Drainage is a problem after heavy rains, but other than that, the course is great. November 12, 2012
Good Public Course SM is a good public course that needs more maintance because of the frequency of play. Otherwise a good value and fun. November 2, 2012
Very good golf course I like this golf course, it is in very good condition and have great features, including practice facilities October 26, 2012
Fantastic Course Santa Maria is my favorite course in the Baton Rouge area. October 20, 2012
Baton Rouge's Best The course is in excellent shape and usually is year round. It is challenging for all levels of play, yet forgiving at the same time. The greens are great, will hold your ball and roll very well. The only thing I would change is the speed of the greens. If you are looking for a fun course with incredible scenery, you will not be disappointed with Santa Maria. I try to play about once a week and would play the course everyday if I could. Only negative is that beverage cart is not being used. October 18, 2012
Great Value Gets a lot of play. A few bunkers needed more sand. October 15, 2012
Great course with friendly staff. We were able to get in 18 holes guickly and were able to play another 9 holes. The staff was very friendly and helpful. October 6, 2012
My favorite course in South Baton Rouge The service is second to none and the course is always in excellent condition. One of the best practice areas in Louisiana. October 4, 2012
Excellent muni - love to play it. The front nine is much harder than the back nine. There are several water features that promise to drown any price range of golf ball. September 25, 2012
Well maintained, challenging course. Great course for a great price. Fairways are always plush and the greens are always smooth and fast. The course design is challenging, but not impossible. I'm proud to call it my home course. September 23, 2012
Well maintained for a muny course. Greens and fairways were in good shape. Fun & challenging course, would play again. September 21, 2012
Fun, quality course for a great price I played on a weekday for $25 with a cart, a great value for a great public course of this caliber. The course offers a good layout, with a variety of challenging, but fair holes. With a little more focus on course maintenance, Santa Maria would easily compete with the premier courses in the Baton Rouge area. Even with the current conditions, I rate the course in my top 5 for the courses near Baton Rouge, behind University Club (Baton Rouge), Baton Rouge Country Club, Country Club of Louisiana (Baton Rouge), and Copper Mill (Zachary). The top three courses in this list are private courses, so in my book, Santa Maria is the best public course in Baton Rouge.
