Cove Cay Golf Club
Poor maintenance and mgmt
The staff here certainly does NOT go out of the way to be friendly. The older gentleman in the pro shop never goes out of his way to crack a smile or be nice to anybody of my younger generation. (I'm 30 years old)
75% of the greens are sandy with many ugly patches. The Tee Boxes are the worst I've ever seen them. Fairways were in average shape.
I live right beside this golf course but go out of my way to avoid this track. Has potential to be a great course because the views at the end of the back 9 are the best in area.
Avoid this course and opt for East Bay (10 minutes away) instead. In the winter months when Snowbirders are down they do pay a bit more attention so may give it another shot in November or December.

I remember it being better
I played this course about 3 years ago and thought it was in fantastic shape so I had always looked forward to playing it again. I just played it again recently and wasn't as impressed. The course itself is very nice, situated in a nice community. It has many challenging holes and some of the holes on Tampa Bay are stunning views. Now the course itself this time....ehh. Many of the fairways, that's right the fairways, were overgrown, probably and inch and a half high grass. The greens were not in good shape wither. Many had weeds replacing some of the grass. The weeds were mowed down low, however the roll is so inconsistent when rolling over different types of grass/weeds. Hopefully they get those problems fixed because the sights on this course are second to none in this area.

Surprisingly very enjoyable
As others have said, the course is not in the best condition. I can't really speak for the green conditions because when I was there the greens had just been punched. There were some bald spots on a few of the greens but the flag was placed away from those areas so the bald spots did not affect play that much. The tee boxes were in bad shape but that didn't affect my game because I never hit off the turf when teeing my ball. The fairways were in good shape though. The real reason I gave this course such a high rating is for two reasons. One, the holes have character, no two are the same. This course has mature trees on most of the holes and the views you get on the finishing holes are worth the price of admission, especially 14 (excellent view of the bridge and bay). The second reason I rated this course high is the staff. They are very friendly to vacationers like myself. Being that I was on vacation I wanted a souvenir to remind me of the experience. So I bought a logo ball and wanted to purchase a divot tool with the Cove Cay logo on it but they couldn't find any to sell to me so I said "that's fine, don't worry about it" and proceeded to the first tee. When I got to the 10th tee, which is by the clubhouse, the gentleman who checked us in when we first arrived came out to the tee box and said he found the logo divot tools and he gave one to my playing partner and I free of charge. That's what I call great service. Next time my family and I are vacationing in the area this course will be on my must play list.

do not play in the heat of summer especially after rain
Pretty course with some of the holes on Tampa Bay. It had rained heavily the night before so therefore extremely hot and muggy with unbearable mosquitoes the last 3 holes. Many tee boxes were pretty rough and greens airraided as GolfNow had said. But, for $18 would recommend anytime except the summer.
Difficult as water on 13 holes and most greens are surrounded by bunkers.

Great Layout on Tampa Bay
We play this course regularly and the condition has improved greatly. As usual the service was great and the staff was friendly.
The layout of the course puts several holes directly on the water with some gorgeous views of the bay. For the price you cannot do better!
Can't wait to play this track again.

worst course in area
They should pay you to play this course. Tee boxes were weed filled. Fairways were poorly mowed with rows of dead grass all over. But the really unacceptable part was the greens. Absolutely unplayable. They had been scarified tho this is not the season. Then heavily sanded. Many had bare spots. All had weeds growing in them a couple had mole trails thru them. You had no idea where your putt was gonna go. I've played this course in the past and liked it. Right now it's easily the worst course in the area.

We played at Cove Cay for the first time this year. The last time was about a year ago. I was disappointed to see that the level of maintenance
has deteriorated. The greens were not in good shape and there was a lot of crab grass around in the fairways. The course has a nice layout and it is a plus that part of it runs along the bay. A little tender care would go a long way to making this course what it once was.
