Love this course.
Long and hard. Great greens, and sand in the traps.

Excellent greens and open fairways.
You can pick your poison from 3 different tees. The black tees are for pros only.If you want to get punished then play the blacks.Greens are fast and true.

Solid Course and great price
I love this course, its local and I think the best course in San Diego for the price. It extremely open yet challenging. It is seriously an amazing course. I try to make it there 2 times a week.

Good mix between narrow and wide open
Carlton has a good combo of wide open and narrow holes. It also has more than a handful of holes that present layups to challenge shotmaking. Also, nice that it is a well established GC, because the trees present a nice course to look at as well. Greens were in solid shape this last outing.

Downhill since last visit.
The greens were well above average. The rest of the course, unfortunately, was not. Also with no marshal the pace of play was very slow. A twosome ahead of us had us waiting on most holes. I also like to see a service cart... I needed coffee or juice.

Otherwise great course needs attention
I first played Carlton Oaks a couple of years ago. The fairways were plush and green, the greens smooth and fast. Fast forward to March 2013. The teeboxes have crabgrass, the fairways are brown, and the greens look like shag carpet. Not sure why the course has gone downhill in the last couple of years. At $39, it's still a decent deal for the money. But, the course's conditions still need some attention.

Good value for the money....
Good value for the money. Staff are friendly. Black tees make it long!

This course was the worst I've ever played
I was very sad to see the condition of the course, considering the price we paid. It's been a long time since I've played carlton oaks it used to be a great course and now it's a course I'll never play again here's a tip water the course it's supposed to be green.

Excellent greens!
Although fairways are still in a dormant condition, the greens are very well kept. As it heats up the fairways should become green and easier to play.

Very friendly staff but the course conditions were horrible. A lot of dead grass. Green fees is over rated (over priced )
Over price!! But otherwise it's a challenging course and the staff is very friendly

Challenging course, great views, fun holes.
I really liked the course. It was hard, with lots of target shots and challenging carries. But it was fair and a lot of fun.
The grass was brown due to winter weather, but played ok. I think the course would be amazing in the spring and fall.

The Greens are Horrible
Given the recent rains, I would have thought this course would have been in decent shape. The course was surprisingly dry. Tee boxes were the only good spots. A Japaneese gentleman that joined us had been staying there and playing there for three weeks. He mentioned that the greens have been under repair and won't be back for another two years. The greens were the worst that I have ever played. It looked like they were painted green, they were hard as a table top, and they had no traction. All approach shots would roll off. Even shots that hit before the green would just roll across. This was very frustrating when nailing the green from 150 yards out or even short chip shots. Very little control on putts and the strategy was to just tap it to try to cut the distance on putts. It was like playing roller hockey rather than golf. If it wasn't such a beautiful day, I would have walk off without finishing the round. I think it will be a long time before I think of playing this course again.

This course is in horrible condition.
I played here several years ago and enjoyed the golf course. This time there was no grass on the greens. I would not recommend this golf course to anyone in the condition it is in.
February 18, 2013
Course needs some work.
Fairways were a little rough and the greens had small pellets all over them. Probably was fertilizer. We were not told of this condition before tee off. Did not see one Marshall to help move play along.

A great course layout
The layout of the course is great. It is challenging yet fair. The greens are much better than when I played two months ago but still need to mature a little.

I like this course
Golf was able to play happily.
However, it was extremely slow play the previous group.
I did not come even once had been waiting for a Marshall.
Also I was driving the ball to within five yards from a follwing group of twice at the ninth hole. It was a dangerous day.

Love this Pete Dye layout
The dormant winter grass conditions left things a little thin in places and looking a little brown, but very playable with the greens still rolling fairly true. As is often the case at Carleton Oaks, pace of play was slow; the course is tough enough to back things up, especially on the par 3s.

Challenging, different
This is a great course - lots of hidden dangers. A great course for a reality check. Plays long up to 7,400 yds. Greens were a little rough and patchy though. Hope they'll be in better condition when I come back.

New Owners?
I haven't played here for about a year and it seems like they are spending alot of money. Much of it is going into the clubhouse but that is a good sign for the future. The story of this course is one of real tragedy for San Diego golfers. This is one of the best tracks in the County but has been neglected for years. The greens were rebuilt awhile ago and the last time I played were shaggy as the roots were left to take hold. This time the greens were cut and fast but would not hold. I'm hopeful.

Asterisk for Winter Conditions
It's tough to judge a course's condition in the winter so I'll hold off until I go back in the spring. As of now it's playable, but some spots are pretty rough - especially the greens.
February 4, 2013
Good greens. Good greenside bunkers. Rough needs much help. Great value for $30; would not pay $75 now.
Carlton Oaks was designed as a great course. I used to play there 20 years ago several times. This was my first time back. Weather was drizzly and light rain. The course does not drain well. The rough areas were wet and in many cases full of water. The fairways were wet with standing water in places and dry otherwise. Dormant, firm and fast fairways. Greens were excellent. Driving range very good. Overall course needs TLC due to condition. Worth playing at a lower price. I will come back later this year and see how it does.

Poor greens
I have played this course once or twice a year for the last five years. It had never been in good shape. Either some greens are being redone... Different tees.... Or the greens are just rock hard and horrible. I spin the ball more than most people and yesterday you could hit ball with a 60 degree and roll it 30 yards off back of cow pasture greens. I like the layout of course but why can't they just get the greens in decent shape. Should only have to pay 5 dollars to play at this dump.
January 24, 2013
course is in terrible shape
The staff, the pro shop and the bar & grill were all great, but the course was a different story. The fairways were brown, the san traps unkept and hardened. The greens were, well, green, but they were not well kept (ball marks, cleat marks, etc.). The pace was also painfully slow. The starter drove around a few times but never communicated anything to us in regards to the pace of play. We had to end our round after 14 holes, which took us 4.5 hours.

This course could be.....
As I was sitting in the cart waiting to tee off, I noticed a card asking golfers to fill divots, fix ball marks, and rake the bunkers to keep Carlton Oaks nice. We'll they might want to take there own advice, the fairways are brown and dry plus the greens are in horrible condition. This course could be really nice and challenging. For now your time and $$ is better spent elsewhere.
January 16, 2013
This was once a great coarse but is in need of upkeep ...... the greens didn't look real and the fairways were brown and there are too many bunkers
I played this coarse a couple of time now and I will only play it when it cost under $30

Lengthy and fun
Greens here are excellent, best I've seen this time of
Year around San Diego. Some long holes but some birdie holes as well. Requires good course management. Good facilities and always a good time.
January 2, 2013
Very good layout. Conditioning poor.
Would be a regular play if conditions improved. Very disappointed with course maintenance. With all the choices to play in the area, I was surprised with the conditions. Won't go back unless I hear of major improvement.

The new greens are challenging
Sometime ago CO rebuilt all of the greens. They are generally large, have substantial undulations and are FAST. 2-putting so no guarantee on any green.
The course is in a low lying area that is prone to winter frost delays - we had about a 1 hr delay. Tee-to-green the course is in better than average conditions for winter golf.
Hazards are large and plentiful - the slope of 132 from the White tees tells you to expect a higher score than you normally have.
Bring your A game here - or it could be a long day - as it was for me shooting more than 10-stokes above normal.

Nicely maintained, friendly staff.
Nice, average challenging, course with a friendly staff.
December 11, 2012
The green complexes need a lot of attention.
The lay-out is great. Especially from the back tee's, has a couple of the most demanding tee shoots out there. But, unfortunately the greens were in such bad shape that it ruined my experience.
