Tight layout. Decent greens. We got a last minute deal and headed over the hill. This is a good test of your driving skill as there are some very tight tee shots needed on some holes. You also need to be on the correct side of the fairway or you'll be blocked out by trees. Pace was slow but it was the weekend so no surprise. Good course to practice shaping shots. Greens were good because they hadn't punched like a lot of courses in the area. April 6, 2013
A good test of golf! Greens were fast and fairways were in good shape after being punched two weeks ago. March 24, 2013
Great local course in Santa Cruz DeLa is always a challenging tight course. It's fun to play and has a beautiful scenery. Trees, deer, view of the ocean. March 19, 2013
Worth playing Course in good overall condition. Got out 1/2 hour early on 1 PM tee time, and course was empty. Fairways and tee boxes in great condition, but greens were in need of some smoothing out. The only water is in the bathrooms. No fountains or jugs on course. BYOD March 18, 2013
One of the most challenging courses for the yardage anywhere. A shotmaker's course. Premium on accuracy instead of length. Grabs your attention on every shot from tee to green. If not careful, some sloping fairways will funnel seemingly good shots into trouble. Consider it an accomplishment to get through a round with no lost balls. Course was generally well maintained, however, a couple of greens were spotty. Pace of play was a little slow but great weather made it bearable. Cold pitcher of beer at the 19th hole capped off a nice day. February 11, 2013
Good test for how you are striking it! You need to manage your ball around this tight layout or else you will find yourself reaching for another ball rather than poke around some potential poison oak. Greens were sloping with runoff areas and were very fast when putting from above the hole. Very scenic with lots of trees and still have room to play the holes. Bordered by park preserve with eucalyptus and pine. February 8, 2013
Beautiful setting in the hills above Santa Cruz. DeLaveaga is an excellent course, located in the hills above Santa Cruz. DeLaveaga is in a natural setting with no homes or traffic in the area. The course isn't long, but accuracy is at a premium with trouble lurking on every hole. Canyons and barancas are located throughout the course, so think strategically in order to avoid penalty strokes. The greens were in excellent shape and are faster than most public courses, but slower than championship courses. February 4, 2013
Quality Muni, Plagued by Slow Play & Useless Marshalls It never fails, I enjoy a round of golf at Delaveaga and then the next time I play it's excruciatingly slow(and this was a thursday, not the weekend.) It baffles me that there is a constant presence of Marshall's roaming this course, lurking behind every dogleg bend but they do absolutely nothing to move play along. This course should take 3 1/2 to 4 hours to play and this past Thursday it took 5 hours to get around. I am not a fast, blast away player but it is no fun to have to wait on EVERY shot. The Marshall program at Delaveaga must be a relic program to appease some long time older golfers, because they do nothing to enforce wasted time. I have a job and a life, let me play and have fun. Do I recommend this course, the answer is - hope you get lucky. February 3, 2013
Well maintained. Course was in great shape considering the resent rains. The greens were a little bumpy but good enough for winter conditions. Pace of play was very good. Had a great time. January 27, 2013
Great place to play golf This is a very narrow at places, but well laid out course that offers copious challenges and beautiful landscape features. It's always a pleasure to play this course, regardless of the time of year! January 16, 2013
This course is vary beautiful. Vary fun coarse but vary wet becouse of all the rain. Wear waterproof cleats in winter months. January 8, 2013
In good condition but wet due to rain Good condition considering the rain we have been having January 6, 2013
Beautiful mountain course. My husband and I visited during a rainy period, so was cart path only. We usually walk anyway, so this wasn't a problem. We found some fun challenges with doglegs with narrow elbows, trees guarding approach shots, carries to the green, narrow fairways. Deer seem to be comfortable on this course. Course could be somewhat punishing without some degree of accuracy, but it's just a beautiful course. January 6, 2013
this coarse is very challenging for playing in december the coarse was in pretty good shape. it was a little sloppy in some areas but with all the rain it was very playable. the greens overall were ok but again due to weather they roled good. for the price i will be back! January 1, 2013
Bargain at $30 special Nice course. Short but challenging. In good condition. Greens slow. December 29, 2012
Fun course First time on this course. Really enjoyed it and the staff were extremely friendly. Despite the morning rain, the course was in great shape. Looking forward to going back. December 7, 2012
Nice muni course Not a long course. Pretty tight-accuracy a premium. Beautiful scenery, nice trees and some ocean views, no houses in sight. Great par 3s, all of them fun and challenging. December 1, 2012
This could be are new Thanksgiving tradition. Great Day! Had a fun day. Coarse was in good shape but a little wet. The carts were not allowed on the fairways due to the wettness so that was kind of a pain. Would have been easier to just carry our clubs. Very challenging coarse that makes you think. The risk of hitting driver on some holes not worth the risk, unless your feeling it. November 23, 2012
Terrible service, terrible fairways & tees, deathly slow play I am a former golf pro, so when I see this kind of incompetence, it bothers me. I booked a 2-some for an 11:52 tee time and we ended up playing the 18th hole in the dark. First off, when we checked in, the pro shop told us there were running "a little behind." That turned out to be 40 minutes behind. Then we had 2 teenagers sneak on the course in front of us on #10, playing 2 balls each, slow us down even more. We called the pro shop, who sent out a marshal, but all the marshal would do was tell the guys to try to play faster. Turns out the guys lied to the marshal, saying the pro shop said it was ok to start on #10. The marshal asked the shop who told him, "no, they never checked in at all." The marshal and the shop refused to do anything more about it. I explained our frustration to the marshal about the late start, slow play and now people sneaking on the course probably preventing us from finishing 18, and he said, "Oh, the real problem is that there were 5 five-somes out today." Really??? If sending out 5-somes causes morning tee-times to already get 40 minutes behind and 5+ hour pace of play, THEN AS A GOLF COURSE, YOU DON'T SEND OUT 5-SOMES!!! The greens were nice, but the tees and fairways were in pretty poor shape. November 13, 2012
A fun and challanging golf course This course has a lot of challenge, trees, a few "shoot over the barrancas. Plays about 41/2 to 5 hours on the weekend. Great for average golfer. November 11, 2012
Course has some well laid out holes and makes for a very enjoyable round of golf. Played on a perfect fall day-temps in the 70's. Pace of play was slow but the day made that okay. The course was a little damp in spots so drainage may be an issue after rain but over all, conditions were great. My only complaint would be going out after a 5-some... Round took 4:55 November 5, 2012
10th is always a nightmare....weirdest golf hole in all of santa cruz and monterey county. Had a third shot into the green, and I muffed it. Narrow fairways so you'll usually lose a couple o fballs unless you can shape shots into the green without going down a canyon....Fun November 3, 2012
Nice layout in Santa Cruz foothills. Good practice range Nice course with some tough holes , gets lots of play could be some slow days. November 2, 2012
Difficult if you don't hit it straight. I've always enjoyed playing at Delaveaga. The course length suggests that it should be easy but to the contrary it is not. The fairways are narrow and somewhat crowned and bordered by barrancas that will gobble up the miss hit shot. You just have to hit quality shots to score here. The course is usually in very good shape and the staff, while sometimes a little too solicitous to the usual customers, are nice enough to first time players. The restaurant and bar are great. The food is good and reasonably priced and the staff are always helpful and friendly. Over all I would highly recommend Delaveaga. November 2, 2012
This is a good course Great course and play time is usually good. Use most clubs on the course and lose a few balls but not to many. October 22, 2012
Not for beginner Tough course with sloping fairways, lots of trees and difficult carries. Greens had been sanded, so not evaluated. Not too many sand traps or water hazards, but the course is tough enough without them! Very cooperative staff. October 20, 2012
Beautiful location/topography; short but challenging; target golf I really enjoy this course (except for the slow play). It's laid out using the natural topography which makes for some very unique and interesting holes. Not a long course (although a few of the par 4's and one par 5 are plenty long). Very much target golf. Thinking required off the tee. Interesting greens as well. October 7, 2012
CHALLENGING COURSE, MUST KEEP THE BALL STRAIGHT The opening hole (Par 5) has a road on your left and a canyon on your right; you must have staight tee shot.. The 10 you will have to lay up to carry a HUGE canyon left (and OB on the right); The fairways; greens; traps are all in great shape. We started at Noon, we had a cart and we were done in 4 1/2 hours. Extremely and unusually warm that day. October 5, 2012
Challenging Course Played Delaveaga from the blue tees, approximately 6000 yards. The course is in the Santa Cruz foothills in a wooded area. The practice facility is small and limited to shots of 200 yards or less. One can only hit off of mats. There is a chipping and putting area by the first hole. The first hole is a par 5 with OB to the left, and woods to the right. It seems tight, but there is more room than you think. 3 wood or hybrid is a good choice unless you are super straight. This is an underlying theme throughout the golf course, as it is not long, however, the course punishes errant shots. It can be visually intimidating at times, for example the 10th hole. The greens are small and some have significant slope and can be speedy. The course will be a good test of your game. October 5, 2012
Good Value, Tight Course Overall for a busy day I felt like the round moved around alright, backed up more in the front 9 then the back. The course is in decent condition again for the value. The major issue I have with this course & the reason I will most likely not be back is that on many holes you have no clear idea where you want to end up. That is to say that it feels like you need to play here once or twice before you have a clear idea of where you want your tee shots to be or what clubs to use on specific tee shots. The course feels very narrow and and even if you find the fairway that does not assure you a reasonable second shot. Overall it feels like an older course with a definite locals advantage, but for the price and the surroundings its not a bad day out. Oh & anything of the fairways by five feet has a 90% chance of laying in a patch of poison oak. October 4, 2012
