Mt. Woodson Golf Club
I'll be back
This is a beautiful, quite challenging course, but unfortunately we played it shortly after they pinned the greens and worked on the tee boxes. The tee boxes were covered in wood chips, and most of the tees were set to the back where it sloped down so your back foot was low and you couldn't get an even stance, making it hard to hit a good tee shot. The grass on the greens was long, making them very slow and almost impossible to get a long putt anywhere near the hole unless you really blasted it, and the ground wasn't even remotely smooth so the ball hopped a lot, and took a bunch of unexpected turns especially as it slowed near the hole. I haven't three putted that many holes in a number of years and shot about 12 shots above my average. That all said, I'm sure this is a great course when it's not in maintenance stage, and the gentleman we were paired with assured as much, and we will be back to try it again later.

Love this course but...
I really love this course! The course is very diverse and each hole comes with new challenges. It's a difficult course with sometimes pretty narrow fairways, so be prepared to bring some extra old balls incase you won't be playing your best golf that day. The course is in good shape, especially considering this hot and dry summer we had. Overall I love coming back here but I do feel like the course condition worsens, while prices keep raising everytime I come back here. I hope they can keep it up, would be too bad if a course like this turns into a bad one.

Overall the course was in pretty good shape....greens just aerated, so putting was difficult, but we knew that coming in. The fairways were a little brown, and shaved awfully close in most places, would like them to sit up a bit more, but that's the way she goes. Staff was nice, gave us some good advice at the first tee. Definitely a course that helps to know the course while playing it. Tough go as 2 first timers.....blind shots, a lot of target golf. Driver stayed in the bag most of the day.

dirt sand traps
The only sand in the traps was a thin layer then hard dirt, very dry fairways. This is a target golf course, but still fun to play. They do tell you about the snakes and poison ivy so take a few extra balls. We were a three some and the first nine moved pretty good but the last nine was very slow.

It got backed up on back nine. No one out there pushing.

I played 18 holes Sunday the 7th and it was great. Checked in, did not wait, and hit away as a twosome. Nobody in front or behind us all day. Im not sure, maybe because of the opening day of football season, it was not busy at all.
A slight breeze kept it from being too hot. I understand under water conservation you cannot water as much as other locations in the US. but the grass was adequate in the fairways. The greens were acceptable.

Change of Pace
This is a great change of pace after playing the longer traditional courses in the area. several par 4's about placement from tee , rather than length. Nice variety of 3 pars as well. Fun shots and interesting changes in elevation. Fairways a bit bare but greens very nice.

Needs Real Sand
Good place to play, beautiful setting and a very challenging course. But, as many of the courses around San Diego, the "sand traps" are not really sand at all, more like dry dirt, it is hard to gauge your sand playing abilities because of the sorry conditions of the sand traps. Now I just pick my ball out if I fall in one of them, it is very unfair to play in them.
