Steele Canyon Golf Club 4.4 5 38 38
Interesting course, many elevation changes, and a fun day of golf Steele Canyon is located about 30 minutes southeast of downtown San Diego. I played the Canyon and Ranch 9s on September 21/12 (there also is a Meadow 9). I highly recommend playing these two 9s for their dramatic elevation changes, scenic layout, and interesting holes. Being a Gary Player designed course you can expect to come across a few split fairways. The Meadow 9 is relatively flat and stretches through estate homes with tighter fairways, which is not my kind of golf course. On the Canyon 9 and to a lesser degree on the Ranch 9 there are some intimidating tee shots over scrub areas that demand accuracy from the tees. Hitting from the tips will be a challenge on many holes if you are not a long ball hitter. The greens are pristine and role true. Fairways were a bit burnt out in some places due to the hot summer season but generally the course was in excellent shape. Prices for golf and concessions are reasonable for southern California but I recommend booking through Golfnow for the best rates on green fees. Over all I had an enjoyable day of golf with a few stops along the way to admire the spectacular mountain views. October 5, 2012
just a great course! 1st time playing this course and it lived up to all the accolades i have heard from other golfers. just a great layout and in great condition! March 31, 2013
Great Value Came all the way from Florida, it was awesome, best value I have ever played. March 16, 2013
Favorite course in San Diego This is my favorite course in San Diego but its tough. Great elevations and greens. March 4, 2013
This is one of the most beautiful courses in the area. The greens are in great shape and very fast. Winter overseeding keeps it beautiful. Great staff both inside and outside, our compliments. Beautiful facility and an asset to San Diego. February 16, 2013
Great holes Holes are all different. Makes it not boring. Change of altitude make it even more interesting February 8, 2013
Great location, great staff, Sam in the shop was awesome Great location close to San Diego Staff were very helpful, Sam in the shop was friendly and super helpful January 31, 2013
Great shape - challenging course - play was too slow Steele Canyon has matured well over 20 plus years. The course was in very good shape. Grass was dormant but played well. Greens were in good shape. Overall the course seemed well maintained. Challenging layout (played Canyon/Ranch). Really judge the tees you play as this course will jump up and bite you. Play was unfortunately very slow but then again it was a Saturday afternoon. January 30, 2013
A difficult, great course! I played Steeel Canyon golf course yesterday. It was a great day. The greens were very hard and very fast. The fairways accepted an excellent shot but punished shots that were less than good. My playing companion was very upset at the difficulty of the course. I pointed out to him, that a golf course with a white tee slope of 134, is a very difficult course. That's Steele Canyon! January 24, 2013
Course would be impossible to walk. The portion in the valley better than the hilltop to hilltop front nine. Would not choose this course over others that are better, even with their lack of maintenance. Won't play here again. January 23, 2013
What a challenge ! This course was in great shape.I would recommend it as a must do for anyone coming to southern California. January 17, 2013
Beautiful This courses is a true beauty. Very fast greens and a true challenge for players of all skill levels. Beautiful views, beautiful course and a great staff . Can't wait to play this one again!!! January 13, 2013
Great Winter Conditions! Winter conditions framed the green fairways. Greens have subtle breaks and are very fast adding to the enjoyment and challenge. Dramatically elevated tees on Canyon nine make for exciting tee shots and excellent views of San Diego County. Ranch nine winds through an actual ranch. Look out for wandering cattle near some of the cart paths. Overall, a very enjoyable day on the course. January 12, 2013
Really Enjoyed the Course I was able to get a Hot Deal of $37 to play here, which made this a great deal. I believe the resident rate is around $55 weekday, which is still a good deal. However, they were also advertising $90 non-resident rates for my tee time, which is too much for this track. The course is set in the chaparral canyons east of San Diego. I played the Canyon and Ranch 9's on this day. I like that each had a unique character to it, with the canyon obviously playing through canyons and the Ranch playing around a working ranch and having more of a pastoral feel to it. Next to one of the holes on the ranch was a collection of old trucks and farm equipment on display, which was pretty interesting to look at, but I digress. The Canyon had more elevation changes to it and elevated tees than the Ranch. I also felt the Ranch was an easier 9 holes than the Canyon. The overall conditions were very good, fairways were green and manicured, greens very fast but well maintained. I also felt they were very difficult to read and gave me fits the entire round. The carts don't have GPS, but was provided with a yardage book, which I kinda like better anyway, more of a test of your golf skills. This is not the most difficult course I have played, but think it has something for every skill level. All in all, a fun course and worth the play. January 9, 2013
excellent! Wow! great course, views spectacular, elevated tee boxes which my son loved! December 31, 2012
Course was in great shape for winter time. Great elevation changes. I believe Steele Canyon is a Gary Player designed course. I played Canyon/Ranch combination. I was very impressed with the great fairway and green conditions for winter time. I would recommend this course if you can find a good price. The only thing missing from this quality course was that the carts did not have GPS. Not a course for beginners. December 29, 2012
Excellent Course Steele Canyon is a great Gary Player design. The course is in great shape, with very fast greens! Staff is very friendly too! December 24, 2012
great course Great course well manicured, greens are fast.Challenging course bring your A game or your B game C wont get the job done. Staff was friendly and accommendating. Course has character and design is excaptional.Fun to play if your game is on. December 21, 2012
This course has amazing views and challenging hole placement. This week we received a lot of rain and the course held up great with very limited amount of standing water. Course demands great precision and offers so of the best vistas on a course. December 17, 2012
course was great.fairway and green were weell maintained this course is very challenging.this couse has 3 courses which has 9holes for the each course.this course was great.the greens were slightly fast.NO GPS!!! December 13, 2012
Very interesting courses to play and half hour to 40 mins away from Metro San Diego There are three nine holes courses Canyon has a great view, up and down around the canyon (I guess why they name him) Meadow is surround with housing development which not in play unless you are a big hooker or slicer! I didn't play Ranch but look forward to on next round December 3, 2012
Nice test of golf skills, with lots of varied terrain, creating an interesting round of golf. Love this course, it located in a beautiful location, and is well maintained. The course will challenge your golf skills. There are 3 nine hole layouts, and each hole will keep you interested, since there is lots of variety from one hole to the next. November 27, 2012
A very nice golf experience! Friendly staff, great greens, challenging layout, fast play. I will play there again! November 26, 2012
very scenic I'm not the best golfer but was very pleased.I will definitely try to make it back here again November 26, 2012
Nice Challenging course Great golf course. Very great looking holes. Challenging course. Kicked my butt. Looking forward to taking on this course again. November 20, 2012
greens are in super shape. Girls in the hot dog shack very nice and upbeat. The clubhouse grill/bar waitresses on the other hand were standoffish. They seemed bored and miffed that they were at work. We sat at the bar and were ignored half the time. I wont sit in there again but, to be fair the staff overall was great. November 11, 2012
great course, fun round course keeps you guessing i really enjoy playing this course. fun course. tough layout plenty of risk-reward. November 5, 2012
This course has great features Course was very tough. Overseeding made it cart path only, which made for a longer (time) round. November 3, 2012
Great course, great deal! I would play Steele Canyon more often if it weren't such a long drive, but for $26 it was well worth the trip. November 2, 2012
Greens and fairways in beautiful shape. Only downfall is there are lots of blind shots and no info on the holes on the scorecard. You need to have some inside information or some hole descriptions on the score card to play this course well. October 31, 2012
