Eagle Ridge Golf Club, located in Gilroy, California ( The Garlic Capital of the World"), is considered one of the finest public-access championship courses in the Bay Area. The layout, a design from 2000 by Johnny Miller, Ron Fream, and David Dale, sits in the middle of a gated suburban community just east of Santa Cruz. Though houses line Eagle Ridge Golf Club, the routing rambles over rolling terrain that still skirts portions of an oak forest. Multiple spring-fed lakes and creeks also sprinkle through the playing field. Spectacular views are a selling point of the game here, as the foothills of the Santa Cruz Range are close at hand and constantly in sight. Over the years, Eagle Ridge Golf Club s championship layout has hosted qualifiers for USGA Public Links, USGA Women s Open, PGA Champions Tour Siebel Classic and numerous NCGA qualifiers. The scorecard lists six different teeing yardages that provide well-spaced playing options from 5,109 yard to 7,005 yards. While Eagle Ridge Golf Club has earned praise for being women friendly, it is not a good choice for beginners. A combination of out of bounds, water features, tall grass, oak trees, and bunkers presents intimidation on almost every swing. Thankfully, the bunkers, which are prolific here, are not as steep nowadays as they were originally when Miller and crew built the course. Nonetheless, they are still large, dramatic, and devilish. Several holes at Eagle Ridge Golf Club require an aerial entry to the green because bunkers and/or other hazards blanket the front of putting surfaces. Alas, those putting surfaces pose another stern challenge. They are huge, fast, multi-tiered, and undulating. A two-putt is no easy task. The club s fine practice facilities include a large driving range, putting green, practice bunker and short-game area. The clubhouse features a restaurant where you can hang out after your round, though the dining room is not affiliated with the club. Situated within an hour's drive of San Francisco and the Monterey Peninsula, Eagle Ridge Golf Club is one of the finest courses in the Silicon Valley.?
