I liked it, wife didn't
I really enjoyed the course, found the layout was open and accommodating for my level of play. Staff was friendly. The course conditions were a little rough and it would have been nice to have softer sand to play out of, but overall a good round

very user friendly
We love this course, the staff is the best!! They are always courteous and friendly and remember you. Best in the valley for customer service and caring. They are great

If you can get it for les than 25 it's a fair price.
A diamond in the rough!! I know it's a bit of the regular path. But if you can find it. It's well worth it. The pace is good and the staff are great! Will make another trip. I played 8 courses and this was the best!!

Challenges await all skill levels, choose your tee box carefully for your skill level.
Course was in good shape, except for some bunkers, which I believe are being removed, no signage indicating ground under repair.

Excellent value!
I have to say it is probably the best value in Phoenix for budget players! Could use some attention, but it's a pretty fun course. Something that is a bit annoying about this course is that a lot of novice players play here and their are 4 holes lined up paralell with each other and a lot of people seem to end up spending time on the wrong fairway.

good greens, very scenic
the course had not been overseeded, not much grass in the fairways, the greens were in good shape. Very scenic, right along the edge of South mountain, lots of wildlife.

Good for the money
The course was in average shape. Tee boxes for the most part were in good to great condition. Greens were in GREAT condition. Fairways were dead so you got a lot of roll.
March 5, 2013
greens were sanded and no sand in bunkers
A fun course although the pace of play was near 5.5 hrs. There are a few holes on the back side that are bunched up on top of each other. I was nearly hit 3 times from errant tee shots.

Dinky course, painted grass
Playing golf in winter should be fun. But this course is all painted green on the summer grass. I guess they do not overseed for winter. All the bunkers are gone, course is becoming easy.
Round of play took lose to 5 hours as they cannot get the slow playing group to keep up with their timing.
some of the greens are missing grass and is bumpy. Overall not fun to play here and would avoid in future.

nice course
I played this course on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013. I really enjoyed my round and the course. I don't understand the painted fairways. The bunkers were not consistent, some had plenty of fluffy sand and getting out was a breeze, other bunkers had a very thin layer of sand before hitting hardpan dirt. I will come back to AZ this summer and want to come back and try the course again.

Painted grass
Although I realized from previous round they don't overseed, it appears that they have painted the fairways to make it look green. If you're ready for that, course is o.k. to play and price is right.

Great staff, course terrible
Showed up to the course, staff was great and even gave us some pointers on the course. The view of the city is amazing from some of the holes, as well as being right up against the North side of South Mountain. Other than the spray painted fairways (yes, they spray paint the fairways because of all the dead grass) the grass around the greens is plush and how it should be for the whole course.
I was really frustrated after we finished 9 though. The golf attendants had let a 4-some go ahead of us and start on 10 holding us back and making it so we couldn't finish our full 18-hole round. The course design I would say is terrible as some of the holes overlap and there aren't many signs telling people where to go for the next hole. This caused another group to come in front of us and played hole 13 instead of 7, which really frustrated us all.
My tips for the course and staff, there need to be clear signs directing golfers where to go for the next hole. Since a lot of the holes are close together, players get confused on where they SHOULD be. Some more advice, invest in some fertilizer and make the grass green. I would golf here again and let my friends know about this course, but not for $38. My top price for this course would be $25 twilight, $35-$38 for morning.

This course has a great layout with with four saets of tees to challange all types of player.
This course should be great when the dormant bermuda grass
comes back. There are great views of Phoenix and South Mountain. This was the first time I played Vistal and I will play here again.

Greens a little too firm but I really enjoy Vistal
I make a point of playing Vistal every time I come to Phoenix, great staff, challenging layout, casual atmosphere. And great food!

Nice experience
Enjoyed the experience. Had to wait almost every hole but still finished in about 4 hours. Greens were hard and fast--there was no stopping the ball on the greens. Awesome scenery.

This course should be ashamed
I have golfed Vistal several times over the past years. In fact I used to golf it when it was the Thunderbird Golf Course...when it was one of the worst manicured courses around, -but at least then you knew what you were getting when you paid $10 to play. Not only do they not over seed the fairways in the winter, they have let the place go. The bunkers are horrible...(no sand to speak of), and I couldn't count all of the places that should have been ground under repair. The Thunderbirds should be embarrassed to call this their golf course. It is one of the worst places I have golfed in many years...even worse than the "broke" city of phoenix golf courses -including Cavecreek and Encanto. I won't be returning any time soon...no matter what the price.

good gold
it's a good course playing right up into the mountains

Good condition Nice Pace of Play!
Staff was very accomodating and course was in good condition

Shappy treatment at shabby course
I kept returning to Vistal because of the somewhat interesting layout despite the poor conditions, but never again. At check in, I was accused of booking at the PGA pass rate without having a card. This would have been impossible since I booked 10 days in advance and the card rate is only available for up to 3 days in advance. When I pointed out that the apparent discrepancy was due to the promo they were running, this fell on deaf ears and I was told to book at the correct rate next time. There will be no next time. Goodbye and good riddance.

Great views over downtown Phoenix
The greens are for the most part fairly good, the rough and the fairways on the other hand needed some help. Although they advertise the pace of play policy there did not appear to be in existance even though the so-called Player Assistant appeared regularly during our round.
Good variety of holes and reasonable rates.

Diamond in the Rough
This course was a great find. Great conditions, Friendly Staff and just a great day on a good well maintained golf course.
February 20, 2013
The course has great views and the grass is usually green.
There was spraypaint on the dead grass. It hasen't looked this bad in the past. This was an exceptionally hard winter so I'm inclined to think that had something to do with it.
February 20, 2013
The course was not as I remembered it. The course had construction areas and painted fairways.
Each fairway was painted a light green over the Bermuda grass(?). The sand traps were devoid of sand. You had a difficult time hitting out properly. Areas had been dug out and were just dirt. The views are very nice of South Mountain and Phoenix. The day we played was very slow and there was no marshall to speed up play.

Great layout with great mountains scenery
Enjoyed the day, the pace of play, and the overall condition
February 18, 2013

Fun course with nice views.
Vistal is a nice course. Challenging and scenic with a great view of the valley and south mountain. It's not super challenging but enough to cause some havoc. I always seem to find the water on 9 and 18. The only part of the course that we always seem to comment on is that some holes seem like they are playing on or across one another. Admittedly, I hit a bad shot and ended up on another fairway. I waited while the group teeing off hit and then proceeded to get my ball. That's when I noticed there were two carts at the tee and two others, besides mine, hitting out of their fairway on another hole. Dangerous.
Overall, a good time and friendly staff.

Vistal
If you don't mind playing on Painted Fairways...yes the fairways are painted green..and Bunkers that no sand..this is the course for you. Total rip-off. Many, many ground under repair areas and pace very slow.
February 17, 2013
Fairways painted green. Ball got a lot of roll on fairaway. Greens fair.

Fun layout and very pretty area
After we had our chuckle over the green dye in the center areas of the fairway, we saw the course to be in need of some maintenance. Greens were in good shape. Not sure if the hand-painted tee box signs were temporary or not. Was surprised to find the course regular price was the same as "GolfNow's 43% savings" price. First time we have noticed that!
